A lot of people do not know that I have a reading disorder unless I outright mention it. I have instructors who can’t tell I have a reading disorder. It is not something that I let hold me back or define what I can and cannot do. The topic for the 13th day of my 30 day writing challenge is: My Reading Disorder.
Sounding out words
Blurred vision when reading
Hard time staying focused when reading
With colors of print and background (pick on green paper makes me very dizzy)
Amount of time I can spend reading
How I remember information
Seeing words as another word or jumbled
All those things come together to be a reading disorder. So as you can see it is not simply having a hard time with reading, it is a nightmare. Some other things that a reading disorder has an effect on that is over looked is the impact it has on:
Willingness to participate with peers and school activities
The negative effects it has on other subjects
The negative effects it has on academics
Having a reading disorder makes some very simple task very hard, and I second guess myself a lot. However, over time I have learned that it is alright if things that come easy to others is harder for me. This world is not set up for someone like me to have it easy so I take great pride in the fact that I have made it this far with the help of siblings and determination.
