My Reading Disorder Does Not Define Me!

Sunday, November 15, 2015

I tend to get attacked by grammar Nazi’s (look below for definition) and the 4.0 know it all’s (look below for definition). But you know what I am not going to let that get me down. I am going to turn this into a positive.

This is for the grammar Nazi’s and the 4.0 know it all’s. I might make a lot of mistakes, I don’t have a 4.0 GPA but what I have is resilience. What I have is the unwillingness to let a school system not set up for people like me, destroy me. Yes I misspell and miss use words. Sometimes I do not even know what I was trying to say when I look back on something I have written.  Did I forget the question mark and use a period? That happens with me. But you know what? I keep going. I keep pushing even though I know I am already behind the person in front of me. It takes me longer to read and I retain less information, but I keep reading. When I write a post on Facebook, blog, or an essay for class I know I am most likely going to miss use, miss spell, or flat out forget a word, but I keep writing. I decided a long time ago you grammar Nazi’s and the 4.0 know it all’s do not get to tell me my hard work is not good enough.

I got picked on by students and teachers in elementary school. I cried at the idea of reading in front of people in middle school, and I dropped out of high school with barely a 2.0 GPA. So you know what I am proud of 3.4 GPA, and all my grammatical mistakes.  I said I was going to do something with my life and a reading disorder was not going to stop me. That I would go to college (and be the first of three generations to get a BA), that I would find a career that was about uplifting and helping others.

So you grammar Nazi’s and 4.0 know it all’s, might make less grammatical mistakes and you might have tested better than me, but I have understanding. I have the heart not to judge others, and I am sorry you are missing that. It is truly an ugly way to have to think. I feel for you looking at people in such a close minded way. My mind may not work as well as yours but I promise you my heart makes up for it.

Grammar Nazi’s are defined by the urban dictionary as “Someone who believes it's their duty to attempt to correct any grammar and/or spelling mistakes they observe.

A know it all  is defined by the urban dictionary as “a person who acts as though he/she knows everything and overwrites.”

A 4.0 know it all as defined by me as "someone who thinks they know it all, and because they had to work, raise children, and go to school they are somehow better and smarter than you."
