What to Consider When Breastfeeding Before and After Baby.

Monday, February 15, 2016

When you decide to breastfeed that is not the end all be all. You have to consider so much more before and after the baby is born. Here are a few things to think about breastfeeding.

Single, Mom, Breastfeeding, bottle feeding, formula feeding

Before Baby is Born.

Should you breastfeed?  If you have a condition or on medications that will have to be picked back up after baby is born, ask the doctor for the okay. Do not make the mistake of thinking breastmilk is filtered like the placenta.

Determine why you want to breastfeed. So many mothers do this (from what I have seen) because they have an idea of 1) the perfect mother doing it, 2) because they feel pressured to do it, 3) they overstate the importance of doing it (read study comparing and contrasting breastfeeding and formula feeding). Whatever the reason is make sure if you cannot do it, it does not send you into a depression. If you have PPD and you have these unrealistic ideas, it can make it worse.

Find out if you have anything that can pass from your body to baby through the breast milk. The CDC states that most mothers do not have high enough environmental toxins that pass from mother to child. They say the benefits outweighs the passing of toxins (I do not agree with this because no study has been done in 11 years by the CDC). The CDC is not to be confused as stating that toxins will not be passed just that is causes no harm (that they know of). However, I feel as mother you need to make that decision.

Will you exclusively breastfeed, breast and bottle (with pumped milk), or breast and bottle (with formula).

After Baby is Born.

Does the baby like it and do you still feel the same about it? My mother did not breastfeed my twin and I because I believe I was not willing to breastfeed. As my mother told me I just cried and my twin did not care one way are the other. Evaluate how you and baby feel once in action.

Watch your diet! If you breastfeed the same way you restricted your diet pregnant you need to do while breastfeeding. If you have a child with allergies what you eat will affect them. Keep track of what you eat and how the baby skin does, poop, and vomit so you know when you need to cut something from your diet.

Where will you pump? Breast and bottle (with pumped milk). If you pump milk and work you need to work this out BEFORE you have to do it. Do not wait until the last minute to figure this out, it will stress you out.

Who will be feeding the baby if you are not? Breast and bottle (with pumped milk or formula) means that others can feed baby. If you plan on going back to work or not let the father, friends, and family feed the baby. It is a great way for them to bond and you to get a break.

    1. Thanks, I have seen some moms get really worked up about it. I do not think any mother should feel that way.

  2. Good tips. That's exactly how my wife and I will handle it, we talked about it very early on into our missed pregnancy. We can't wait to put the tips to use, hopefully sooner rather than later!

  3. I like that this is a neutral approach - not pushy or judgmental one way or another. It's difficult as a parent to make all the "right" decisions in such a judgmental world!

  4. I wasn't able to breast feed either of my kids. I chose not to with the first one. I wanted to with the second one, but I didn't produce breast milk until two weeks after he was born. I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Ha. Great article though!
