6 Ways Singles Make Valentine’s Day Special

If you’re single this Valentine’s Day, consider it an excuse to treat yourself to a unique experience. It’s on a Tuesday, which means singles and couples alike will be working around usual weekday tasks from work to helping the kids with homework. Still, making time for yourself—especially during the dreary winter months—is an integral part of holistic wellness and staying sober.
Need some inspiration? Consider indulging in one of these solo-friendly activities:

1.       Try a new yoga class. Whether it’s at a new studio, with a new instructor, or check out a live streaming class or video, movement is key to happiness and health. Maybe you usually head to the treadmill or spin class on Tuesday nights, but use Valentine’s Day as a reason to be a little kinder and gentler on yourself. As an added bonus, evening yoga classes are often designed to encourage a better night’s sleep.

2.       Enjoy a home cooked meal. Maybe you’ve been itching to try a new recipe, replicate a favorite dish from your childhood, or perhaps it’s time to check out that local restaurant featuring from-scratch recipes for a takeout treat. Food that’s cooked with love and intention has many benefits from being healthier to natural portion control.

3.       Schedule a spa service. Massages, manicures, threading sessions and more. While such services are usually earmarked in our psyche for special events or weekend tasks, why not indulge yourself on Valentine’s Day? There may be holiday specials, such as chocolate wraps, or add-on amenities such as champagne post-sauna session. Some spas even offer singles-only services, also known as a respite from the heart- and chocolate-fueled day you just powered through.

4.       Immerse yourself in anti-Valentine’s Day entertainment. If it’ll bring you down, avoid the mushy Valentine’s Day films and television episodes and instead seek out anti-Valentine’s Day entertainment. Valentine (2001), Holidays (2016), and My Bloody Valentine (2009) are just a few of the horror-centric films giving a ghastly homage to the holiday. Horror fans don’t have to wait until October to satiate their genre cravings.

5.       Call your parents or closest friend. Valentine’s Day has a tendency to make everyone feel a little in need of love, attention and affection. Seek out the people most likely to pour it on. For many, that means a parent or close friend.

6.       Plan the morning’s chocolate shopping spree. There’s no better time to pick up your favorite holiday chocolates and sweets than the day after the fact. Just like Easter, Christmas and Halloween, the day after the big holiday features seriously discounted sweets and treats. If you have a soft spot for chocolates in heart-shaped boxes or specialty Peeps, make sure you schedule a quick stop in the morning to treat yourself. Plus, it’s incredibly satisfying to see the Valentine’s Day displays heavily picked over and pushed aside to make room for the Leprechaun and clover-covered incoming displays.

Whether you decide to celebrate Valentine’s Day on your own terms or bypass it entirely, it’s just 24 hours. It will pass quickly, and everyone will soon be onto the next holidays and spring break planning. How will you direct February 14th this year?

  3. Back when I was single, I would turn Valentine's Day into a treat myself kind of day. I'd get myself flowers, chocolates, stuffed animals, and do whatever I wanted. Those were some fun times, haha. x)

  4. I love that you have something for the single girls. I got married young so I didn't have a ton of single valentine's days but I feel like going out with your girls would definitely be a great and fun way to spend Valentine's Day. I think there are so many different types of relationships that should be celebrated!
