4 Things to do After Going to Court

Saturday, April 22, 2017

I have had a court case thrown out twice after 7k, there were many tears and a lot of stress I was pissed off, hurt, and over EVERYONE. This is sometimes the hard truth about going to court sometimes it does not go your way, and it is beyond stressful. Divorce, custody battles, mediation, judges, your cazy a** ex are apart of single motherhood (for a great deal of us), and the last thing you want is for them to dictate your happiness.

If you are a single mother chances are you have spent some time in court. The idea of a courtroom is enough to drive a woman crazy. I have a few things I like to do after going to court just to brush off the stress and anxiety so I do not carry it home.

I have had a court case thrown out twice after 7k, there were many tears and a lot of stress I was pissed off, hurt, and over EVERYONE. This is sometimes the hard truth about going to court sometimes it does not go your way, and it is beyond stressful. If you do not have a game plan you can get swallowed by the negative emotions. You do not want to take those feelings into your day to day life.

First, get the day off of work. You don’t want to go back to work upset. You're just going to distracted, annoyed, and wishing you were not at work. Really take a court day to hear what the judge has to say. Take it in, and than let it go. You cannot do this if you go from court to work and are pissed off and simmering in the feelings.

Second, vent to some. I do not care if the person was in the courtroom with you. Vent until you're blue in the face. This is really helpful if what is going on is not going in your favor, but it can also help you mellow out if things did go in your favor (no one likes a sore winner). I have a week rule for court hearings if they don’t go your way, that is after a week unless someone needs to know do not bring it up again. You do not want to get stuck in the situation, onwards and upwards.

Third, do something to relax. Go out to eat, have a drink, go shopping, go have a picnic do whatever you want just get out. The worst thing you can do go home with all this emotion.

Lastly, Meditate. There are a lot of ways to meditate besides sitting with your eyes closed you can color, do a puzzle, knit, or write, run. All these things require you to clear your mind and focus on one thing. This clearing of the mind will allow you to get back to your day to day life.

Divorce, custody battles, mediation, judges, your cazy a** ex are apart of single motherhood (for a great deal of us), and the last thing you want is for them to dictate your happiness.  I am not saying after these 4 things you won’t go home and cry your eyes out or that a week later you won’t, but what I am saying is if you let yourself feel it when it happens you can move on. You have to move on.

Have you ever had to go to court? Did it go your way? How did you relax when it was over? Tell me in the comments below.

  2. I could imagine it sucks. We did mediation and that was painful enough. Good tips for unwinding

  4. Can I pipe in for the single dad and court? Agree, agree, agree, agree! Court is the most nerve-wracking thing I've ever gone through that didn't involve someone's health!

    1. Yes you can pipe in... It really is and it is made worse when it just gets dragged out.
